How to open a Proton Drive link without a Proton account

Someone shared a Proton Drive folder with you. Open it, preview the files, and keep an encrypted copy, without creating a Proton account.

Updated 12 October 2026

Proton Drive’s shared links are end-to-end encrypted. The link itself carries the key, and Proton’s servers only hold encrypted blocks. Klenod opens them the same way Proton’s own web page does, decrypting on your Mac. No Proton account is needed.

Steps

  1. Copy the full link. It looks like https://drive.proton.me/urls/…#…. The part after # is the password for the link, so keep it.
  2. In Klenod, open Cloud folders, paste the link and choose Open folder. If the sender set a custom password, Klenod asks for it.
  3. Preview the files. Folders keep their structure.
  4. Select what to keep and choose Back up selected.

Every block is checked against Proton’s own hashes and the file’s key as it downloads, and the whole file is checked again at the end. Backups resume if the connection drops.

Good to know

  • Proton sees the request. Proton learns your network address and which blocks are read. It never sees the link password or the decrypted files.
  • Uploader signatures aren’t verified. Like Proton’s own public page, Klenod can’t check who uploaded a file without the uploader’s account keys. The checks prove the file is what Proton stored, not who made it.
  • Proton Docs and Sheets open only in Proton.
  • Links can expire or hit a download limit set by the sender.
